What
is MegaPath T1 Service?
A T1, or DS1, is a high-speed data link protocol that has been
a standard in the telecommunications industry for more than
three decades. A T1 transfers data between two points at 1.544
Mbps symmetrically, and is ideal for customers who need a high-speed
connectivity to the Internet or as one link in their virtual
or real private network.
To provision the service, we work with your local telephone
provider to provision a "local loop" between your premises and
the nearest central office (CO). From this CO, your data is
transported on a state-of-the-art optical network to our nearest
Internet Protocol (IP) switch. From there you, your data is
either routed directly to the Internet or kept within a private
network for internal communication with your business’
other branch offices and/or telecommuters.

Why
purchase a T1 when SDSL is so much cheaper?
MegaPath
offers both Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (SDSL) service
at 1.5 Mbps at a much lower price than our T1 service. What’s
the difference between these two products?
Not all customers can receive 1.5 Mbps SDSL service, but all
customers in serviced Central Offices can receive MegaPath
T1 Service. Because of technical limitations of the DSL protocol,
only those customers less than 10,000 feet from their CO can
receive 1.5 Mbps SDSL. However, T1s are engineered to extend
tens of miles, so almost all customers of a serviced CO can
purchase T1 service. In addition, the local exchange carrier
will remove bridge taps, load coils, and splices from the
wiring when provisioning a T1; they won’t do this for
a DSL circuit.
| T1
has been an industry standard for decades. Although SDSL and
T1s are about equally reliable, the local exchange carriers
have more experience in trouble-shooting and repairing T1s.
This means that the mean-time-to-repair (MTTR) for a T1 line
is generally shorter than that for a DSL circuit.
T1 circuits are transported over a more robust channel. DSL
is designed to be a lower cost alternative to the more traditional
data communications products, such as Frame Relay and T1s. One
of the ways this lower cost is achieved is by having DSL circuits
share more of the data transport infrastructure. With 1.5 Mbps
SDSL, your data traffic shares the connection with other DSL
circuits running at slower speeds. On the other hand, the infrastructure
behind MegaPath’s T1 Service is dedicated to transporting
only T1 traffic.
What do I need to use MegaPath’s
T1 Service?
If your business qualifies for T1 service, you
will need a router and a CSU/DSU that takes your LAN traffic
and converts it to the T1 protocol and vice versa., MegaPath
supplies and supports the Netopia 5300 CSU/DSU + Router. This
router/ CSU/ DSU combo includes eight (8) Ethernet ports, NAT/PAT
address translation to help ensure security, an optional VPN
feature and more.
If you have a T1 router and CSU/DSU, please speak with your
MegaPath sales representative regarding compatibility with MegaPath’s
network.
